European stocks ended lower on Friday, posting their worst annual performance since 2018, dragged lower by a slowing economy as the war in Ukraine, surging inflation and aggressive central bank tightening took their toll.
The Stoxx Europe 600 Index closed the last session of 2022 with a 1.3% drop, taking yearly losses to 13%. Volumes were lighter than average this week amid the holidays, and markets in the UK and Germany closed early on Friday. The FTSE 100 ended the year with an annual gain of 0.9%, avoiding the global stock selloff, while the DAX Index slumped 12%.
